How to Help A Loved One Adjust to Life in Prison

As a 24-hour bail bonds agency, we work closely with distraught relatives and friends who just want to bring their loved ones home.

Unfortunately, it’s not always so simple. When someone you care for is sentenced to prison time, it can be a deeply painful experience for you, but it’s even more traumatic for them.

There are some steps that you can take to help them adjust to life in prison and make this time easier for you both.

1. Visit Them Regularly

This is, by far, the most important thing you can do for a loved one in prison.

We understand that it may not always be convenient, and you’ll probably need to make a few adjustments to your schedule to fit in regular visits.

However, if you’re willing to take the time and work out the logistics, you’ll be doing something great for them.

Knowing they’re about to have a relative or friend visit them gives a lot of hope to inmates. It’s something they cherish and look forward to in an otherwise bleak routine.

2. Communicate

In addition to visiting them as regularly as you can, remember to use other ways of communication as well.

For example, prisoners get a fixed number of minutes for telephone calls every month. Make sure that your contact number is added to the list of ‘approved numbers’ so that your loved one will face no difficulties in reaching out to you.

Additionally, consider sending them a handwritten letter once a month or so, asking about their well-being and telling them about your life. You can also share stories from their hometown or other information that they might find interesting.

Not only will this help keep your loved one informed about the outside world, but handwritten letters are also valuable for them to hold on to during their time in prison.

3. Keep Their Spirits Up

Spending time in prison can make a person feel dejected, isolated, and lost. Over time, such feelings can lead to mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety.

During your visits and in your letters and phone calls, encourage your loved one to keep their spirits up. Give them hope and offer positivity and support.

You should also help them understand that their time in prison will come to an end, and eventually, they’ll be able to return to their life, home, and friends.

4. Top Up Their Account

This is perhaps one of the most tangible ways you can help someone in prison, yet many people don’t bother doing it.

Inmates need money to purchase essential items, such as toiletries and phone cards. It’s also needed to buy stationery and snacks. Essentially, money is just as important inside a prison as it is outside it.

Don’t leave your loved one in the lurch. Depositing some money into their account, as often as you can, will help them buy the things they need to make their life in prison more bearable.
