The number hit an all-time high in 2015, with around 737,100 reported cases. The study also stated that the occurrence of such cases is higher in the US compared to other developed countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What exactly is a hit-and-run?<\/span><\/h2>\n

When we hear the term \u2018hit-and-run,\u2019 we think of a car speeding through a crowded road, hitting a pedestrian, and zooming off. And if that\u2019s what you guessed, you\u2019d be right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As per the legal definition, a hit-and-run accident is when a vehicle hits either a person or another vehicle and leaves the scene without stopping to provide their information. According to\u00a0<\/span>Indiana Code<\/span><\/a>, leaving the accident scene is a crime in itself. If you\u2019re unable to do so and the owner isn\u2019t available, you should at least leave:<\/span><\/p>\n

    The personal information includes your name, driver\u2019s license, any information about your vehicle (insurance and registration number), and your contact information.<\/span><\/p>\n

    If a person has been harmed or injured as a result of the accident, you must facilitate their transport to a nearby hospital. If the property damage exceeds $1,000, it\u2019s the driver\u2019s responsibility to report the accident to local authorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    If the driver fails or refuses to comply with any of the above-mentioned regulations and leaves the accident scene, they\u2019ll be charged with a Class B misdemeanor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    However, if the accident resulted in bodily injury to someone and the driver flees the accident scene, it would be a Class A misdemeanor. If the accident results in the death of another person, the crime would be considered a Level 5 felony. The same would be categorized as a Level 3 felony if the driver was under the influence of an intoxicant while operating the vehicle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
